Details on The Undergraduate Placement Scheme
This is a fantastic opportunity for someone considering an actuarial career to gain a full years’ experience of real actuarial work before returning to university to complete their studies. Experience of this nature will really make you stand out from the crowd upon graduation and will leave you with a real feel for what an actuarial career has to offer.
Because we have built up excellent relationships with many of the key actuarial employers, we can offer you access to the widest choice of actuarial employers, fields of actuarial work, and UK-based locations.
There are three key stages to the scheme:
- Submission of a CV Online: You can apply for a placement position by filling in a CV template found here and emailing it to sham@the-arc.co.uk. Detailed feedback will be provided to all serious applications.
- 'Coaching' Interviews: Based on the quality of the application, a number of students will be interviewed. Coaching will be provided, together with feedback on the student's overall performance.
- Employer Applications: The strongest CVs will be submitted to actuarial employers, who put selected students through their own selection processes. Additional coaching interviews are provided to help students who reach this stage also.
The Benefits of a 12+ month Placement
You won’t find yourself making coffee for your manager for 12 months! The work you’ll be doing is no different to that of a new graduate.
- You’ll gain relevant work experience in one or more actuarial fields, allowing you to develop vital workplace skills, as well as greatly enhancing your chances of finding a graduate role.
- The opportunity to develop a relationship - and possibly obtain a graduate position - with an actuarial employer.
- Gaining a placement position can greatly ease the pressure to obtain a graduate role in your final year.
- Enhanced technical knowledge, which will help you in your final-year studies.
- Developing a network of actuarial contacts.
- A salary to help pay off student debts!
In addition, we provide expert CV advice and interview coaching for students who apply for placement positions, and for those students who are successful in obtaining a role, we provide a friendly professional support network, with one-to-one mentoring if and when required.
All placements arranged by us provide relevant actuarial experience. Because of this, the 12-month placement counts towards the minimum 3 years required for FIA/FFA status, so it won't delay the time it takes you to qualify.
